Ahmed El-Salamouny „Bastard Beats“

Bastard Beats is inspired by Jean Claude Izzo's 'Marseille Trilogy'. In these books he describes the beauty of the city Marseille, but also its other sides like the problems of the arabian immigrants, who have to live at the lower end of society as well as the corruption in politics and the influence of the Mafia. The main character of the book Fabio Montale tries to live his life in this society with his personal values.: loyalty, helping the underdogs, nonconformists and his Arabian friends and criticising capitalism. Although he is enjoying music, the mediterranean food, the life at the sea with his friends and lovers, life's drama and bitter ending is inevitable. Montale is an outsider and as this he is treated. For me composing and playing this music is also a statement: I believe in collaboration. I believe in living together with people of all kind of origins. And I believe that we can work together for a better society, where everybody can participate in the worlds wealth. Bastard Beats dissolves nationalism. We are all of uncertain origin, but in the end deriving from the same African roots of the first human beings. In the music there is also no national identity - you may perceive Brazilian rhythms, Arabian melody lines, Classical or Spanish guitar, Jazzy or Funky parts in the music. It does not import where it comes from, the emotion is it all.

Explanation of the book titles: Total Cheops is a slang word by the Rap-Musicians in Marseille - it means total chaos. Chourmo is an ancient word in Provençale which means galley slave. Solea refers to Miles Davis of which Fabio Montale is a fan. (as me too) My additional titles Marseille and Espoir (hope) are an intro and an interlude. The whole suite is about 17 minutes long.
